Built the way a shower should be built

Every walk-in shower we install is framed square, waterproofed with a sheet membrane, flood-tested, and finished with tile and glass I'd put in my own house.

The pretty part is the last 20 percent. The first 80 is what keeps it dry in year ten.

  • The old shower, tub or stall out and hauled away
  • A curbless or low-threshold entry with a linear or center drain
  • A sloped mortar pan on cement board, membrane over everything, flood-tested
  • Tile floor to ceiling: large-format porcelain, marble, subway or mosaic
  • A built-in tile bench and recessed niches that look designed, not bolted on
  • 3/8-inch frameless glass, measured after the tile
  • Grab-bar blocking, slip-resistant floor tile and comfort-height fixtures when you want them
The details

What a walk-in shower installation includes:

Curbless, low-threshold, or a stall

Three ways to build a walk-in, and the slab under your house decides a lot of it.

  • Curbless (zero entry): the floor runs straight into the shower, a linear drain at the back wall. The best-looking and the safest. On a slab it means recessing the floor or raising the room, so it costs the most.
  • Low threshold: a 2-inch tiled curb. Easy to step over, keeps water in, works on any slab. The most common choice.
  • Enclosed stall: a full glass enclosure with a door, for a bathroom where the shower sits beside a tub or a doorway. Framed and semi-frameless are options when the budget is tight.

Tile and glass, plainly

You pick the look. I'll tell you what each choice costs and how it lives.

  • Large-format porcelain: fewer grout lines, easiest to clean, stands up to Florida humidity. My usual recommendation.
  • Marble and natural stone: beautiful in a primary bath, and it needs sealing once a year.
  • Subway and handmade tile: classic, more grout, more setting time.
  • Mosaic: the floor, the niche or one feature wall. Adds character and labor.
  • Glass: a fixed panel costs least; a frameless hinged door with a return costs most. Framed is still an option.

Slab houses and Florida water

Almost every house I work in sits on a concrete slab, and that's the first question for a curbless shower: do we recess the slab, build the bathroom floor up, or use a low-profile linear drain? I'll walk through the right one for your house on the first visit. Two other local facts shape the job.

  • Humidity: a ducted exhaust fan sized for the room is on every quote, and the membrane runs up the walls, not just across the pan.
  • Hard water: South Florida water leaves scale on glass and fixtures. A squeegee and a weekly wipe keep frameless glass clear; I'll show you on the walkthrough.
  • Condos: certificate of insurance, elevator reservation and work-hour limits are built into the schedule, and the water shut-off is coordinated with the building.

The guarantee, and what to expect

One year on our work.

If a grout line, a seal or a drain gives you trouble in year one, I come back and make it right. A walk-in on its own takes 7 to 10 working days on the existing drain, up to 14 when the drain moves or the shower grows; inside a full remodel it rides the remodel's schedule.

  • A written schedule before we start, and a call if anything changes it
  • The pan flood-tested for 24 hours before a single tile goes on
  • Glass measured after the tile and hung about a week later
  • A walkthrough together before the last payment

Need the whole bathroom done?

A walk-in shower is often the heart of a bigger job.

If the vanity, floor and lighting are tired too, a full remodel usually costs less per piece than doing them one at a time. And if you have a tub nobody uses, the conversion page covers that exact swap.

How the job runs. 7 to 10 working days on the existing drain.

  1. Shower floor with the slab recessed for a curbless entry and a linear drain body set in mortar

    Step 1

    Layout and drain

The slab is recessed for a curbless entry, the linear drain body set in mortar at the back wall, the framing checked square.

  2. Curbless shower with a sloped mortar bed and a sheet waterproofing membrane folded up the walls

    Step 2

    Slope and membrane

A sloped mortar bed, then a sheet membrane folded up the walls and over the drain flange. Flood test, then wait.

  3. Marble-look porcelain being set on a curbless shower floor sloping to a linear drain

    Step 3

    Tile

Marble-look porcelain set on the sloping floor to the linear drain, every edge cut on the wet saw, clips on every joint.

  4. Finished curbless walk-in shower with continuous floor tile, a linear drain, a frameless panel and a built-in bench

    Step 4

    Glass and finish

The frameless panel hung, brushed nickel trim on, the bench and niches grouted, the floor continuous from bathroom to shower.

Frameless glass is measured after the tile is in, so its line on the quote is a real measurement, not a guess.

Walk-in questions

How much does a walk-in shower cost in Broward County?

On its own, $6,500 to $11,000 for a tiled walk-in with glass. As part of a full bathroom remodel, $14,000 to $28,000. A primary bath in marble with a curbless entry runs $28,000 to $55,000 or more. Every quote is free and itemized.

Can you build a curbless shower in a Florida slab house?

Yes. We either recess the shower floor into the slab, build the surrounding bathroom floor up, or use a low-profile linear drain. I'll walk through the right option for your house on the first visit.

How long does walk-in shower installation take?

Most are 7 to 10 working days on the existing drain, up to 14 when the drain moves or the shower grows, including demo, the pan and flood test, tile, glass and finish. Custom tile patterns or special-order glass can add a few days, and I'll say so in the schedule.

What's the best tile for a walk-in shower in South Florida?

Large-format porcelain. Fewer grout lines, easy to clean, and it shrugs off the humidity. Marble and natural stone are beautiful in a primary bath if you're willing to seal them once a year.

Do I need frameless glass?

No. Semi-frameless and framed enclosures are still options when budget matters. Most clients pick 3/8-inch frameless because it looks clean, opens the room up, and ages well.

What are the disadvantages of a walk-in shower?

Water on the floor if the slope or the glass is wrong, which is a building problem, not a design one.
