What comes out of a 1960s Pompano bathroom
A third of Pompano Beach's housing was built before 1970 and 61 percent before 1980 (Census ACS 2024), which makes it the oldest stock on my route.
The 1950s turned farmland into subdivisions here; Harbor Village's canal homes along the Intracoastal date, by the listings, to 1959 and 1962; Leisureville's 928 residences went up from 1968 to 1970; Palm Aire's condo buildings date to 1967 through 1972. The bathroom in those homes is usually an original, and the Census data points to the era's norms: a heavy cast-iron tub, 4-by-4 tile, and a drain line in whatever the builder used that year. Pulling the tub is the first morning. Scoping that drain is the second.
- Low threshold is the Pompano default: a 2-inch tiled curb on the original slab with the drain at the tub's end wall, no concrete cut, the quickest build.
- Curbless in a house: recess the slab for a linear drain at the back wall. In a 1960s slab I check thickness before promising it.
- Both get the same pan: sloped mortar on cement board, sheet membrane up the walls and over the drain flange, a 24-hour flood test, then tile floor to ceiling and glass measured after the grout.
The city's checklist is my schedule
Pompano Beach publishes a Kitchen/Bath Renovation Checklist, and I build the job in its order.
So the licensed plumber sets the drain body and the rough is called, the framing is checked before cement board closes it, the top out follows the valve, and the finals come after the glass. The checklist asks the plans to show the full scope of the plumbing alterations and every fixture scheduled for replacement, so the spec sheets go in with the drawings.
Above the ground floor
Forty-six percent of Pompano Beach housing is in buildings of 20 units or more, the beachfront and Intracoastal towers and the garden condos at Palm Aire and Cypress Bend.
A tower bathroom sits on the building's deck, which is never cut, so curbless means a raised bathroom floor or a low curb.

Seniors, soft water, and help with grab bars
Nineteen percent of Pompano Beach residents are 65 or older and 15 percent live below the poverty line, which is why I mention two programs on every Leisureville and Palm Aire visit.
Broward's Aging and Disability Resource Center lists a free short-term home-modification program for seniors, grab bars, shower seats and raised toilet seats up to $6,000, with the flyer hosted on the city's own housing site. Broward County's Barrier-Free track goes further, bathroom retrofits and doorway widening up to $60,000 as a forgivable loan. For the shower itself: blocking behind the tile where the bars go, a fold-down or built-in seat, a hand-held on a slide bar, and the city's water, published at 1 to 2 grains of hardness, among the softest in Broward, which keeps the glass and the drain grate clean with a squeegee.

Pompano Beach walk-in questions
Something else on your mind? Call or text (954) 242-5924.
How much does a walk-in shower cost in Pompano Beach?
$6,500 to $11,000 on its own, in 7 to 10 working days. A low-curb shower in a 1960s tub footprint is the lower end; a slab recess for a linear drain, or the sound-barrier assembly the city requires above the ground floor, pushes toward the top. The quote is written and itemized.
Is a Leisureville house a good candidate for a walk-in?
Yes. It's a single-story 1968-to-1970 home on a slab, so I can recess for curbless or build a low curb, with grab bars in blocking, a seat and a hand-held. The community is 55-plus, and the senior home-modification program the county lists can cover grab bars and a shower seat for qualifying residents.
Do you handle permits?
Yes, we can help with permits. Ask us about your job when we come to look.
What changes for a condo above the ground floor?
The deck is never cut, so the shower gets a raised floor or a 2-inch curb.
Will the old cast-iron tub be a problem?
It's heavy, and it comes out in pieces on the first morning. The real question is the drain line behind it, which the plumber scopes before we commit to curbless.
