What we do in Pompano Beach.

The conversion I build everywhere, in the city with the oldest tubs and the most detailed bath checklist in Broward.

Everything we do in Pompano BeachEverything we do in Broward CountyWhat it costs: Tub-to-Shower Conversion Cost in South Florida

The oldest tubs in Broward

A third of Pompano Beach housing was built before 1970 and 61 percent before 1980 (Census ACS 2024), so the tub I'm asked to pull here is usually an original: cast iron in a 1950s Old Pompano house, a 1959 to 1962 Harbor Village canal home, or one of Leisureville's 928 residences from 1968 to 1970. The 4-by-4 tile around it hides bare block or studs and a drain line as old as the house. The tub gets cut out in pieces, the alcove goes to the studs, and the plumber scopes the drain line before a new pan goes on it.

  • Leisureville is 55-plus: bench, hand-held on a slide bar, grab-bar blocking, a low 2-inch curb.
  • Harbor Village and the other canal lots are low ground; the slab decides whether curbless means a recess or a linear drain.
  • Palm Aire condos from 1967 to 1972 and the Cypress Bend phases from 1974 to 1989 share risers, so the shut-off is scheduled with the building.

Above the ground floor: what the checklist asks of a conversion

Pompano Beach's Kitchen/Bath Renovation Checklist is the rulebook, and it treats a condo conversion differently from one in a house.

A conversion that stays inside the alcove puts its new tile on a mortar pan, but if the bathroom floor is part of the job, that assembly is on the quote.

  • Plans must show the full scope of the plumbing alterations and identify every fixture scheduled for replacement; the spec sheets go in with the package.
  • Units that aren't single-family also need a plan showing the smoke detectors, sprinklers and alarms.
  • If the fan gets wiring, the electrical page is signed and sealed or carries the qualifier's notarized signature.

Water at 1 to 2 grains, and fluoride gone

Pompano Beach publishes its hardness, 1 to 2 grains, from two plants that lime-soften and membrane-soften Biscayne Aquifer water for Pompano, Lighthouse Point and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

That is the softest water I work in, and it changes what I recommend: a frameless hinged door with a return, matte black or brushed trim, and a thermostatic valve are all safe choices here because scale won't shorten their lives. The city stopped adding fluoride in July 2025 under state law. A squeegee on the wall and a ducted fan are the whole maintenance list.

  • The city's flood portal shows your zone and any elevation certificate on file before you plan more than a bathroom.

Pompano Beach conversion questions

Does a tub to shower conversion in a Pompano condo need the sound-barrier test?

Above the ground floor, the city's checklist wants the plan to show the limits of new flooring and a lab report for the sound barrier under it.

How do you get a cast-iron tub out of a 1960s Pompano house?

Cut into pieces in the alcove and carried out, with the floor covered. Then the plumber scopes the drain line, because a third of this city predates 1970 and the line under the tub is usually the original. A sound line gets built on; a failing one gets a change order before we continue.

Can a Leisureville tub become a walk-in shower?

Yes, and it's the most common request I get from that community. A low 2-inch curb, a bench, a hand-held on a slide bar, grab bars set in real blocking, and a new valve with scald protection. 7 to 10 working days at a fixed price.

Do you handle permits?

Yes, we can help with permits. Ask us about your job when we come to look.

Is soft Pompano water good for a frameless door?

It's the best in my service area for it. At 1 to 2 grains, scale barely forms, so a frameless hinged door, matte black trim and a thermostatic valve all age well here with a squeegee.
