Safer to use, and still a nice bathroom

A lot of my customers are longtime South Florida homeowners thinking about safety and staying in the house they love.

Some are adult children arranging it for a parent. I take that seriously, and I build it so it doesn't look like a hospital.

  • A curbless or low-threshold walk-in shower in place of the tub or the old stall
  • Grab bars set into solid wood blocking inside the wall, placed where that person actually reaches
  • A built-in tile bench or a fold-down teak seat
  • A hand-held shower on a slide bar, plus a fixed head
  • Slip-resistant textured floor tile, in the shower and on the bathroom floor
  • A comfort-height toilet and lever handles
  • Wider clearances and a pocket door where the layout allows
The details

What an accessible bathroom remodel usually includes:

Conversion or full remodel

Most accessible bathrooms are delivered one of two ways, and the budget usually decides.

  • As a tub-to-shower conversion: the tub out, a zero or low threshold in, blocking, bars, bench and hand-held. $6,500 to $11,000, 7 to 10 working days.
  • As part of a full remodel: everything above plus a new floor, vanity at a usable height, lighting you can see by, and a wider door. $14,000 to $28,000, about two weeks.
  • Bars only: if the shower is fine and you just need grab bars installed into proper blocking, that's a handyman visit, not a remodel. I'll say so.

What moves the number

  • Zero threshold on a slab: recessing the floor or a linear drain is the biggest single cost.
  • Blocking: opening the wall to add solid blocking is cheap during a remodel and expensive afterwards. We add it everywhere a bar might ever go.
  • Fixtures: a thermostatic valve that holds temperature costs more than a standard one and matters more here.

Walk-in tub or shower, and Medicare

Two things I get asked every week.

First: a walk-in tub or a walk-in shower? I don't sell walk-in tubs. You sit in them while they fill and while they drain, the door seals wear, and they take longer to use than the tub they replaced. A curbless shower with a bench and a hand-held is what I'd build for my own parents.

The details

Second: will Medicare pay for it? Original Medicare does not cover bathroom remodeling or grab bars as a rule; it treats them as home modifications, not medical equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid waivers and veterans' programs offer help with home modifications. I'm a remodeler, not a benefits advisor, so I'll give you a written, itemized quote you can submit anywhere, and I'll point you to the agencies, not pretend to be one.

The guarantee, and what to expect

One year on our work, the Done Right Promise.

On these jobs I also do one thing extra: before the tile goes on, we stand in the empty shower together and mark where the bars and the seat should be for the person who'll use it. Then that's where they go.

  • A written schedule before we start
  • The toilet and sink usable most days of the job
  • A thermostatic valve installed and temperature-limited by the licensed plumber to reduce scald risk
  • A walkthrough with the person who'll use the bathroom, not just whoever's paying

Living with it

Textured floor tile hides water spots and grips wet feet; a soft brush and a mild cleaner keep it that way.

Grab bars in real blocking don't loosen. If a bar, a seat or a valve ever feels wrong in the first year, call me and I'll come adjust it.

How the job runs. 7 to 10 working days.

  1. Open bathroom wall with solid wood blocking screwed between the studs at grab-bar height

    Step 1

    Blocking in the wall

With the wall open, solid wood blocking goes between the studs at grab-bar height, marked for the person who'll use it. This is the step you can't do later.

  2. Zero-threshold shower entry under construction with a trench drain at the back wall and cement board walls

    Step 2

    Zero-threshold entry

The floor transition built flush with the bathroom floor, a trench drain at the back wall, cement board on the walls.

  3. Textured slip-resistant porcelain floor tile being set with a freestanding wooden shower seat bracket on the wall

    Step 3

    Textured floor and seat

Slip-resistant porcelain on the floor, the fold-down bench bracket mounted through the tile into the blocking.

  4. Finished accessible shower with two grab bars, a hand-held shower on a slide bar and a fold-down bench

    Step 4

    Bars, hand-held, finish

Two grab bars into the blocking, the hand-held on its slide bar, the comfort-height toilet set. Then the walkthrough.

“He renovated my mom’s bathroom. She asked that I mentioned how he made sure to stay on budget, communicated well and has great attention to detail. He was creative and always came up with a solution. Strongly recommend him for any job.”

Accessible questions

Something else on your mind? Call or text (954) 242-5924.

How much should a walk-in shower for seniors cost?

As a tub-to-shower conversion with blocking, bars, a bench and a hand-held, $6,500 to $11,000 in Broward and Palm Beach County. As part of a full remodel with a wider door and a new floor, $14,000 to $28,000. Every quote is free and itemized.

Will Medicare pay for a walk-in shower or a tub-to-shower conversion?

Original Medicare generally does not; it treats bathroom modifications as home improvements, not medical equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid home and community waivers and veterans' programs offer help with home modifications. I'll give you an itemized quote to submit, and point you to the right office.

Is a walk-in tub better for seniors than a walk-in shower?

In my experience, no. You sit in a walk-in tub while it fills and drains, the door seal is a wear item, and it takes longer to use than the tub it replaced. A curbless shower with a bench, a hand-held and bars in real blocking is what I'd build for my own parents.

How do I make showering easier for an elderly parent without a full remodel?

Grab bars into solid blocking, a hand-held shower on a slide bar, a fold-down seat and a thermostatic valve. Those four are a handyman visit if the shower itself is fine. If there's a tub to step over, the conversion is the real fix.

What tiles should not be used in an accessible shower?

Polished porcelain, glossy ceramic and honed marble on the floor. They're slick wet. Use a textured porcelain with a slip rating, in a size with enough grout joints to grip, and keep the polished tile for the walls.

How long does an accessible bathroom remodel take?

7 to 10 working days as a conversion, about two weeks as a full remodel. The toilet and sink stay usable most days, and I plan the water shut-offs around the person using the house.
