Interior doors on your existing openings

Most interior door calls are a swap: the hollow flat doors from the 1980s out, a panel door in.

I hang on the opening you have, which keeps it a handyman job instead of a framing job.

  • Slab doors fitted to the existing jamb: hinges mortised, lockset bored, edges trimmed to the opening
  • Prehung doors when the old jamb is shot: jamb and casing out, new unit shimmed plumb, casing back on
  • Pocket doors rehung on new rollers, or the track replaced when it's worn
  • Bifold and closet doors tracked and adjusted so they close flat
  • Painted or stained to match, or left primed for your painter

Exterior doors, and what a licensed partner does

Interior doors, thresholds and weatherstrip, storm doors and locks: those are my crew's work.

A replacement exterior door is different.

  • Same-size steel or fiberglass entry door swaps on the existing frame
  • Thresholds, sweeps and weatherstrip replaced so the air conditioning stays inside
  • Sliding glass door rollers and tracks repaired so the door glides again

Hardware

New hardware changes a door more than new paint.

I install what you pick, or bring a few options to the visit.

  • Levers, knobs, deadbolts, privacy sets and smart locks
  • Hinges swapped from brass to black or nickel without rehanging the door
  • Strike plates reset so the latch catches without slamming
  • Door stops, closers, sweeps and kick plates

The repairs: sticking, sagging, not latching

A door that rubs at the top corner has usually dropped on a loose top hinge.

A door that won't latch has a strike that's an eighth of an inch off. A door that swings open on its own was hung out of plumb. These are fast fixes when someone knows where to look, and they go on the list with everything else.

  • Hinge screws replaced with long screws into the framing
  • Doors planed or trimmed where the humidity has swelled them
  • Strikes moved or filed so the latch lands in the hole
  • Split jambs repaired and painted after a break-in or a kicked door

South Florida doors have their own problems

Humidity swells wood doors in the summer and shrinks them in the dry months, so a door that sticks in August can rattle in January.

Interior slabs here are mostly hollow core, and a painted-shut door that's been forced has often split at the hinge. On exterior doors, the hurricane hardware and the approval sticker on the frame matter; I check what the house already has before I quote a swap.

How a door job runs

  1. Step 1

    Measure the opening

Width, height, jamb depth, hinge side and swing checked on the actual opening so the door that shows up fits it. Hardware and finish picked.

  2. Step 2

    Hang and shim

Old door and hardware off. The new slab mortised and bored, or the prehung unit set in the opening, shimmed plumb and level, and screwed through the shims into the framing.

  3. Step 3

    Hardware

Lockset and deadbolt fitted, strike plates set so the latch catches softly, hinges adjusted until the gap is even all the way around.

  4. Step 4

    Adjust and finish

Casing nailed and caulked, stop reset, the door swung a dozen times, and the old door and packaging hauled away.

Door questions

Something else on your mind? Call or text (954) 242-5924.

Can you replace a door without replacing the frame?

Yes. If the jamb is square and solid, a slab door is fitted to it: hinges mortised to match, lockset bored, edges trimmed. If the jamb is split, rotted or out of square, a prehung unit is the better fix, and I'll say which on the visit.

Do you install impact doors?

Through a licensed partner, yes. It's shown as its own line on the quote.

Why does my door stick in the summer?

Humidity. Wood doors swell in the wet months and shrink in the dry ones. The fix is usually a planed edge and a sealed top and bottom, sometimes a hinge reset. If it only sticks in August, I'll trim it so it clears then and still latches in January.

Can you fix a door that won't latch?

Almost always in one visit. The latch and the strike plate have drifted apart, usually because the door dropped on a loose hinge. Long screws into the framing and a reset strike fix most of them. It's a good item to add to a list.

Do you paint the new door?

If you want. Interior doors can come primed and get two coats in your color, or stained to match the trim. Or I leave them primed for your painter. Either way it's on the quote so there's no surprise.
