What I repair

Drywall is the most common line on a handyman list and the one most people have tried to fix once already.

The patch is the easy part. Making it disappear is the job.

  • Doorknob holes, anchor holes and the hole from the thing that fell off the wall
  • Cracks at corners, above doors and along ceiling seams
  • Water-damaged sections cut out and replaced, after the leak is fixed
  • Full sheets replaced after a plumbing repair or a mold cleanup
  • Nail pops, loose tape and bubbled seams
  • Holes left behind by an electrician or a plumber

Water damage: the source first

A stained, soft or sagging patch of drywall is a symptom.

Before I close it up I want to know the water has stopped, whether it was a roof, a window, a supply line or the air handler. If the source is plumbing, the licensed plumber I bring in fixes it first. Then the wet drywall comes out past the stain, the framing dries, and the new piece goes in.

  • Wet drywall cut out to clean, dry material, never patched over
  • Insulation behind it checked and replaced if it's wet
  • A stain-blocking primer so the old water mark never bleeds through
  • If I see mold beyond a small surface patch, I tell you and we talk about remediation before I close the wall

Matching the texture

Most South Florida walls and ceilings are knockdown or orange peel, and a smooth square patch in the middle of a textured wall is what a bad repair looks like.

I match the texture to what's there, spray or hand-applied, and feather it out so the edges disappear.

  • Knockdown: sprayed, left to set, then knocked down to match the size of the existing pattern
  • Orange peel: sprayed at the same pressure and thickness as the surrounding wall
  • Smooth: three coats of mud sanded flat with a light raked across it to find the edges
  • Popcorn ceiling patches are their own page; I match those too

Painting it to blend

A repaired patch painted with a brush in the middle of a rolled wall will show in raking light.

I prime the patch, then roll the whole wall corner to corner when I can, or at least to a natural break. If you have the original paint, bring it out. If not, I'll match it.

The small minimum, and the list

There's a small minimum per visit so the trip works for both of us.

One hole is rarely worth the drive on its own, so most clients stack the drywall with the rest of the list: the door that sticks, the fan, the caulk in the bathroom. Text me photos of each thing and you get one written quote. One year on our work, the Done Right Promise, same as the remodels.

How a drywall repair runs

  1. Step 1

    Cut out and back

The damage squared off to solid drywall, backing strips screwed behind the opening, a new piece cut to fit and screwed to the backing.

  2. Step 2

    Tape and three coats

Mesh or paper tape over the seams, a setting compound first, then two topping coats, each one feathered wider than the last and sanded.

  3. Step 3

    Texture

Knockdown, orange peel or smooth, matched to the wall around it and blended past the edge of the patch.

  4. Step 4

    Prime and paint

Stain-blocking primer on the patch, then the wall rolled to a natural break in your color. Outlet covers and pictures back up, floor swept.

“Brad was a pleasure to work with. He was on time and did a great job with the stucco work that I needed done. Pricing was very fair, highly recommend!”

Drywall repair questions

Something else on your mind? Call or text (954) 242-5924.

How much does drywall repair cost?

It's a written quote from your photos or a visit, with a small minimum per trip. A single hole is rarely worth the drive on its own, so most clients add the other items on their list and get one itemized price for all of it.

Will the patch show?

Not if it's done right, and that's the whole job. The texture is matched to the wall around it, the edges are feathered out, and the wall is rolled to a natural break instead of dabbed in the middle. In raking light a good patch is invisible.

Can you fix water-damaged drywall before the leak is fixed?

I won't, because it would be back in a month. If the source is a supply or drain line, the licensed plumber I bring in fixes it first. If it's a roof or a window, that gets handled first by the right trade. Then the wall gets opened, dried and closed.

What if there's mold behind the drywall?

A small surface patch I can cut out and replace. If it goes further than that once the wall is open, I stop, show you, and we talk about a remediation company before anything gets closed up. I don't bury it.

Do you match knockdown and orange peel texture?

Yes, both, and smooth. South Florida walls are mostly knockdown, and the trick is matching the size of the pattern and knocking it down at the right moment. I feather it past the patch so there's no square edge.
