A tub you don't use is wasted space

Most of the people who call me about this stopped using the tub years ago.

They step over 14 inches of porcelain to stand in a shower that was never designed as one. Pulling the tub and building a proper walk-in changes how the whole room feels without moving a wall.

  • Tub and surround out, hauled away the same day
  • A new mortar pan, sloped to the drain, with sheet waterproofing up the walls
  • Tile walls to the ceiling, a niche, and a bench where there's room
  • A low 2-inch threshold, or a curbless entry
  • A new valve and trim; the old valve almost never survives the demo
  • A fixed frameless panel or a hinged glass door
  • Grab-bar blocking in the wall, whether you want bars today or not
The details

What the conversion includes:

Tile or a liner: the honest comparison

You've seen the ads: a new shower in one day.

That's an acrylic liner or a composite surround fitted over your old alcove by a franchise crew, usually sold at a kitchen-table visit with financing. It's fast. It isn't what I build, and here's the plain difference.

  • A liner: one or two days, a plastic surround over the old walls, a short list of colors and sizes, sold by a sales rep, and often quoted at or above a tiled conversion once the visit is over.
  • Tile: 7 to 10 working days, a real waterproofed pan on cement board, any tile you like, a bench and a niche, and a fixed price from me, not a sales rep from a Miami franchise.
  • Ten years on: buyers can tell the difference, and so can the next plumber.

What moves the number

Five things, all of them on the quote.

  • Threshold. A low 2-inch curb is standard. Curbless means recessing the slab or a linear drain, and costs more.
  • Tile. Large-format porcelain is the best value. Marble, mosaics and patterns add setting time.
  • Glass. A fixed panel is the least; a frameless hinged door with a return is the most.
  • Extras. A bench, a second niche, a hand-held on a slide bar, a rain head.

Older South Florida alcoves

Nearly every tub alcove I open in Broward is a 60-inch alcove on a slab in a house built between the mid 1960s and 2000.

The drain is at one end, the valve is in the wrong place for a walk-in, and there's no blocking in the walls. None of that is a problem. It's the job.

  • Slab houses: the mortar pan is built on the slab, so a curbless entry needs a linear drain or a recess.
  • In older houses the drain line is often cast iron; the plumber checks it before we build on it.
  • Condo alcoves: the association's rules on insurance certificates, elevator time and work hours go on the schedule, and water shut-offs get coordinated with the building.
  • Humidity: the licensed electrician installs or upgrades a ducted fan. Every time.

The guarantee, and what to expect

One year on our work, the Done Right Promise.

If anything isn't right, I come back. On a conversion you're without that shower for the full 7 to 10 working days; the toilet and sink stay usable most of the time.

  • Water off only during the plumber's hours, and I'll tell you when
  • The site covered and swept every night
  • Glass is measured after the tile and takes about a week to arrive, so the last day is sometimes a short return visit
  • A walkthrough together before the last payment

Keeping it

Squeegee the glass, run the fan, and that's most of it.

Porcelain needs no sealing; natural stone does, once a year. If the caulk at the bench or the threshold cracks in year one, call me.

How the job runs. 7 to 10 working days.

  1. Old bathtub standing on edge in a hallway with the alcove stripped to bare studs

    Step 1

    Tub out

The old tub leaves on its edge through the hallway, the alcove goes to the studs, and the drain line is exposed in the slab for the plumber to check.

  2. New mortar shower pan sloped to a center drain with a framed low curb and cement board walls

    Step 2

    The new pan

A mortar pre-slope troweled to the drain, a low curb framed, cement board on three walls. Then the membrane, then a flood test before any tile.

  3. Tile set to shoulder height in a converted alcove with a tiled niche and a bench waiting for its top

    Step 3

    Tile and niche

Greige porcelain up the walls, the niche framed and tiled, the bench top waiting for its slab.

  4. Finished low-threshold walk-in shower with a fixed glass panel, a tiled bench and a niche

    Step 4

    Glass and finish

Grout, the fixed glass panel, matte black trim, hex floor tile. Then the clean-up.

Tub-to-shower questions

Something else on your mind? Call or text (954) 242-5924.

How much does it cost to convert a bathtub to a shower?

In Broward and Palm Beach County, $6,500 to $11,000 for a tiled walk-in with glass, a new valve and a bench where there's room. Moving the drain or going curbless lands at the top of that range. Every quote is free and itemized.

Is it a good idea to convert a tub to a shower?

If you don't use the tub, yes. It's safer to step into, it gets used every day, and it opens the room without moving a wall. Keep one tub in the house if you can; if this is your only one, I'll talk you through the resale trade-off honestly.

Why not a one-day tub-to-shower conversion?

A one-day job is an acrylic or composite liner over your old alcove. It's fast, and it's what the franchises sell. A tiled conversion takes 7 to 10 working days because the pan is built, waterproofed and flood-tested before the tile goes on. It's a real shower, in any tile you like, at a fixed price from me.

Is there a kit that converts a bathtub into a walk-in shower?

There are kits, and they're a surround over a plastic base. They don't fix the drain location, the valve or the waterproofing behind the wall, which is where leaks start. I don't install them.

Do you handle permits?

Yes, we can help with permits. Ask us about your job when we come to look.

Can you live in the house during the conversion?

Yes. The toilet and sink stay usable most days, water goes off only during the plumber's hours, and the site is swept every night. You're without that shower for the 7 to 10 working days.
