My crew sets the tile. No tile sub.

On a lot of remodel jobs the tile is handed to a subcontractor and the person who quoted you never sees the wall again.

On mine, the two guys who demo your shower are the two guys who set the tile, and I'm on site. That's how the niche lands on a grout line and the cuts end up where nobody looks.

  • Large-format porcelain, 12 by 24 up to 24 by 48 and slab sizes, on the walls
  • Mosaic and small-format floors that slope cleanly to a center or linear drain
  • Marble and natural stone, sealed, with a straight answer on upkeep first
  • Subway, zellige and handmade tile with the irregular joints they're meant to have
  • Niches, benches, curbs and half walls, tiled to match
  • Full retiles of an existing shower, including everything behind the old tile
The details

Shower tile we set:

What's under the tile is the job

Tile and grout are not waterproof.

They're the finish. What keeps a shower dry is the layer behind them, and it's the part that decides whether the tile is still tight in ten years or coming off the wall in three.

  • Cement board on the walls, never drywall, never the old tile
  • A sheet membrane at every seam, corner and the drain flange, and a flood test on the pan before any tile
  • A mortar pre-slope under the pan so water moves instead of sitting
  • Niche and bench framing waterproofed as part of the wall, not patched in after
  • In a retile, the old board comes out too, because what's behind it is usually the reason you called

Large-format tile, set flat

Big tile looks simple and is the hardest to set well.

A 24 by 48 porcelain that isn't dead flat shows every lip in raking light and catches a toe on the floor. Here's what we do about it.

  • Leveling clips and wedges on every joint, snapped off after the thinset sets
  • Thinset combed on the wall and buttered on the tile back, so there are no hollow spots
  • A one-third offset, not a half, on long planks that bow in the middle
  • Every cut on the wet saw, valves and outlets cut clean with a hole saw
  • Walls plumbed and flattened before the first tile, because tile can't fix a wavy wall

Niches, benches and drains

The details are where a tiled shower earns its price, and they get planned before the first box is opened.

  • A niche is sized to the tile so it falls on grout lines, with a sloped sill so water runs out
  • Two niches stacked, or one long horizontal one, depending on the wall and what you keep in there
  • A bench is framed, sloped a touch toward the drain, waterproofed and topped in the wall tile or a solid slab
  • A linear drain at the back wall lets a large-format floor slope one way and run straight in
  • A center drain means a mosaic or small-format floor so the tile can follow the slope on four sides

Grout, caulk and the choices that matter

Grout is the part you'll look at every day and the part most likely to go dark in a Florida bathroom.

Pick it with me, not from a chip in the store.

  • A high-performance or epoxy grout resists stains and never needs sealing; standard cement grout costs less and gets sealed
  • Sanded grout for joints over an eighth of an inch, unsanded for tight joints and polished stone
  • Color close to the tile makes a wall read as one surface; contrast shows off a pattern and every speck of soap
  • Every change of plane, the corners, the bench, the curb, gets color-matched caulk, not grout, so it can move without cracking
  • Natural stone and cement tile get sealed before grouting and again after

Retiling a shower you already have

If the shower works and only the tile is dated, a retile on its own is a real option, and I quote it in writing after a visit.

Two honest notes: once the old tile is off, what's behind it decides the job, and if the pan has failed, a retile becomes a tub-to-shower conversion or a walk-in rebuild. I'll tell you which before any tile is ordered.

How the tile goes in.

  1. Step 1

    Layout on paper

We pick the tile, then I draw the walls: where the full tiles start, where the cuts hide, where the niche sits on a grout line. The order goes in with overage for cuts.

  2. Step 2

    Board, membrane, flood test

Cement board on flat, plumb walls, sheet membrane at every seam and the drain, and the pan filled and left overnight to prove it holds.

  3. Step 3

    Setting

Floor first or walls first depending on the drain, clips on every joint, each cut on the saw, the niche and bench tiled as we reach them.

  4. Step 4

    Grout, caulk, seal

Grout worked in and washed twice, the corners and bench caulked to match, stone sealed. Then the glass goes on the calendar.

Shower tile prices

Tile rides inside the shower and remodel ranges. On its own, it's a written quote after a visit.

  • Inside a bigger job

    to $11,000

Tub-to-shower conversion, tiled to the ceiling

The tile, pan, membrane, glass and valve, all in. 7 to 10 working days.

  • Inside a bigger job

    $14,000

    to $28,000

Full bathroom remodel, tile walls and floor

Keep the layout, replace everything. About two weeks.

    Retile an existing shower

Depends on what's behind the old tile, the size, and the tile you pick.

  • Tile on its own

    On the quote

Shower tile questions

Something else on your mind? Call or text (954) 242-5924.

How much does shower tile installation cost?

Inside a tub-to-shower conversion, the tile is part of the $6,500 to $11,000. Inside a full remodel, part of the $14,000 to $28,000. A retile of an existing shower on its own gets a written quote after a visit, because the size, the tile and what's behind the old tile set the price. I don't quote tile by the foot over the phone.

Can you tile over existing shower tile?

I won't. The old tile hides the old board and the old waterproofing, and the new tile would only be as good as what's under it. The old tile and board come out, the wall gets waterproofed properly, and the new tile goes on something I trust.

What size tile is best for a shower?

On the walls, large-format porcelain, 12 by 24 or bigger: fewer grout lines and easier cleaning. On the floor it depends on the drain. A linear drain takes large tile sloped one way; a center drain needs a mosaic or a small format so the floor can slope on four sides.

Is porcelain or ceramic better for a shower?

Porcelain. It's denser, absorbs almost no water, and the color runs through the body so a chip doesn't show white. Ceramic is fine on a dry wall and costs a bit less, but in a South Florida shower I set porcelain or stone.

Do I need to seal shower tile and grout?

Porcelain, no. Natural stone and cement tile, yes, before and after grouting and about once a year after that. Standard cement grout gets sealed; an epoxy or high-performance grout doesn't, which is why I steer most showers that way.

How long does shower tile take to install?

It rides inside the shower or remodel schedule: a tub-to-shower conversion is 7 to 10 working days and a full remodel about two weeks, and the tile is the middle of that. The pan has to flood-test before setting, and grout has to cure before the glass goes on, so I don't rush either one.
