What we do in Fort Lauderdale.

The walk-in shower, in a city where a quarter of the houses predate 1960 and a third of the units are in big buildings.

Everything we do in Fort LauderdaleEverything we do in Broward CountyWhat it costs: How Much Does a Walk-In Shower Cost?

Old houses, old drains, curbless anyway

Fort Lauderdale's median home dates to 1973 and about 25 percent of its housing was built before 1960 (Census ACS 2024).

Sailboat Bend, the city's oldest neighborhood, is early-1900s to 1950s bungalows and Mission and Mediterranean Revival cottages; Victoria Park holds 494 of the city's pre-1945 houses on an old coral ridge; Rio Vista boomed in the 1920s. A walk-in shower in one of those bathrooms starts with the original drain line, which the licensed plumber scopes with a camera before I cut anything. On a sound slab, I recess the shower footprint for a linear drain at the back wall.

  • Recessed slab or a 2-inch tiled curb, chosen on the first visit with the slab in front of us
  • Sloped mortar pan on cement board, sheet membrane folded up the walls, a 24-hour flood test
  • Tile floor to ceiling: large-format porcelain, zellige-style, hexagon mosaic or marble
  • Blocking for grab bars behind the tile, a built-in bench where there's room
  • 3/8-inch frameless glass measured after the tile and hung about a week later
The details

What the build looks like in a Fort Lauderdale house:

In a tower, the building's rules come first

Thirty percent of all Fort Lauderdale units are in buildings of 50 or more, the highest share of any city I work in, and the concrete deck under a condo bathroom is never cut.

A curbless shower there means raising the bathroom floor to meet the pan, or settling for a low curb with the linear drain tied into the existing drain location. The Regency Tower on Galt Ocean Drive puts it in writing: nobody enters a wall, ceiling or floor without written permission and the superintendent's supervision, materials move only through the service elevator with mats and wall protectors, and the loading dock is reserved in advance. Coral Ridge Towers wants at least $300,000 in liability coverage naming the association, no dumpster use, and no Sundays. I've read both, and the schedule is built around rules like them before the first tile arrives.

  • Certificate of insurance sent to the manager before day one, service elevator booked, water shut-off for the riser coordinated with notice to the neighbors below

Two waters, one squeegee, and the lead inventory

Fort Lauderdale softens its Biscayne Aquifer water two ways: the Fiveash plant by lime and the Peele-Dixie plant by nanofiltration membranes.

Which one reaches your house decides how fast scale builds on frameless glass and on the slots of a linear drain; a squeegee after each shower and a monthly vinegar wipe keep either one clear, and I'll show you on the walkthrough. Two more facts worth knowing while the wall is open: the city's 2025 report shows a lead 90th percentile of 4.85 parts per billion with one of 55 sample sites over the action level, and the city finished a lead service line inventory you can check by address. If your house is pre-1986 the plumber looks at the supply side while he's replacing the valve.

On every Fort Lauderdale walk-in quote

In a house

  • Camera scope of the original drain before any cutting
  • Slab recess with a linear drain, or a 2-inch curb
  • Mortar pan, membrane, 24-hour flood test

    Fort Lauderdale walk-in questions

Something else on your mind? Call or text (954) 242-5924.

How much does a walk-in shower cost in Fort Lauderdale?

$6,500 to $11,000 on its own in 7 to 10 working days on the existing drain, up to 14 when the drain moves. A slab recess with a linear drain, or a raised floor in a condo, sits at the top of that range.

Can a 1940s Victoria Park house get a curbless shower?

Usually, yes. The plumber scopes the original drain first, then I recess the slab for a linear drain at the back wall. If the slab turns out too thin to recess safely, I build a 2-inch curb instead and you'll have seen both prices before we decide.

Can you do a zero-entry shower in my Galt Mile condo?

Only by raising the rest of the bathroom floor, since the building's deck is never cut. Most owners choose a low 2-inch curb with the drain in the tub's old spot. Either way I send the insurance certificate, reserve the service elevator and dock, and follow the building's rules on hours and wall access.

    Do you handle permits?

Yes, we can help with permits. Ask us about your job when we come to look.

Should I worry about lead in an older Fort Lauderdale house?

Check the city's service line inventory by address; the 2025 report shows one of 55 sample sites over the action level. The shower doesn't change that, but the plumber is already replacing the valve and supply stubs, so it's the right time to look at the supply side.
